75th Anniversary

The clubs 75th Anniversary will now be celebrated on the 1st February 2014 and will coincide with opening day. All members including nine holers will be invited to attend. The reason for the change is that we have too much on from now through to Christmas i.e. new caterers etc. I am told it will be a day to remember.

Auction – 75th Anniversay

The committee is planning an auction on the day and we would like members to consider donating memorabilia suitable for the auction. We already have a handmade in St Andrews “The Laird” putter in a special tartan case donated to the club.

Website

A re-build of our club website is planned over the next 3 months to improve the sales functions of the site and introduce a Members Only section accessed by password.
This section will include the day to day club information, results etc and it is hoped that the various officers of the club and the Board will use it for communication with members.
Suggestions are requested from members for the type of information they would like to see, frequency etc. The main pages of the site will become more sales oriented to attract people to our club and to facilitate the website as the main advertising medium for the club to use.  Constructive suggestions are requested and should be emailed to roger@hallwebcare.com.

General Meeting

Over 100 members turned out for the general meeting on Monday night, an excellent turnout. Tony Hunter, your president outlined all the issues and advised the meeting about the overall situation. There were a number of suggestions by members to assist the club which will all be considered by your Board going forward. The board would like to thank everyone for their contributions and support. The next steps are refining next year’s subscriptions including possible 3, 5 and longer memberships for the AGM. Preparing changes to the Constitution for the AGM to consider and finalise the Strategic Plan that the Board have been working so hard on besides all the other things they have been doing.

Festival of Golf

Next Thursday 24th is the Festival of golf at Greenacres and they will be teeing off at 10.30 in a shotgun start. We are still taking entries and teams may still enter before next week.

Rarangi Visit 16th November

Please put your names down for this visit, it appears that we won’t be taking a bus because most folk would possibly stay over. Remember Rarangi brought over 40+ players last year so it would be great to get a strong contingent from Greenacres.

Marshalls for the Summer

During the summer we are looking for volunteers to do some marshalling of green fees and recovery levies before 8am and after 6 pm when the Pro shop is closed. I presume members who play early or in the evening may like to assist and we would prepare an authority and possibly get some Marshall tops for the volunteers to wear if required. Hugh Kavanagh has put his name forward for some mornings, thanks Hugh.

This week’s special is 15pct off all wet weather gear.

Also we have the following clubs on offer

Sharpies Golf Club

75 years old this year and Greenacres Golf Club are setting firsts in the NZ golfing world.

On Tuesday our ladies helped us to become the first golf club to shoot a calendar in the altogether on a NZ Golf Course and also it was the first nude calendar shoot to have a television crew present during the actual shoot.

‘The Cut’ golfing magazine described it as a ‘Unique Occasion for New Zealand Golf’ and I think that sums it up perfectly.

‘Seven Sharp’ were the TV crew present and it will air on Channel 1 after the 6pm News either Wednesday 9TH Oct at 7pm or 7pm Thursday 10th Oct – YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS IT. It made the front page of the Nelson Weekly and hopefully will be in today’s Nelson Mail.

We would like the calendar to be available for sale by 25th October – all going well and hope that you will all support it. The profits will be split jointly between Greenacres and Special Olympics Nelson (a very worthwhile cause).

I cannot thank everybody present enough, those that helped were tremendous, Sandra Johnson from Boutique Photography was truly wonderful and I think I speak for all the ladies when I say that we HIGHLY RECOMMEND her services, the crew from Seven Sharp were marvellous.  But most of all our lady models were truly the stars of the day. The weather was not kind but these ladies were absolute heroes, they looked stunning, had a great attitude and despite a lot of waiting around between takes never grumbled. THANKYOU ladies, my admiration for you all is boundless and it was Sharpies absolute pleasure to assist you in putting together something that Greenacres Golf Club can be truly proud of and something that the future members of Greenacres will look back on 75 years from now and say WOW, THIS IS A GREAT CLUB!

Match Play – Club Competitions

The Match committee would like to remind members that if they are playing a match they cannot enter the competition of the day. You may enter two’s and jackpot only.

Benefit For Ranui House in Christchurch

Ranui House is one of the houses that families stay free of charge when a member of their family is being treated for a chronic disease. Linda Hanna is currently in remission with Leukaemia and went through three difficult treatments of Chemo and radiotherapy. Peter Hanna and his family had the experience of benefiting from Ranui House while Linda was being treated. Apparently a number of families from Tasman and Nelson benefit from this facility. Peter is planning a concert at the Hope Community hall on 30th November at 7.30pm at a cost of $20 a head and all proceeds are going to Ranui House. George Rutledge and the Gabor Trio plus a number of other acts will entertain you on the evening. Apparently the acoustics are great so it promises to be a great evening. Contact either George Rutledge phone 5410134 or Peter Hanna 5440304 and be in quick because the tickets are selling well.

Golden Downs Combined District Open Day

Ladies Golden Downs Combined District Open Day and 4 Ball is on Thursday 3rd October and the cost is $20 per person includes afternoon tea and 2’s. Tee off at 10.30am.

Practising On The Course

Greenacres rules are simple, if you are on your own please don’t hit more than two balls. On the fifth tee a couple of weeks ago someone was practicing of the blue tee with a number of divots on the tee and this idiot did not even bother to repair them. If anyone spots someone doing this please let us know so we can deal with it.

Welcome to New Members

A big welcome to Dave MacDonald as a full member and Lee Doosun as summer member. Enjoy our great course and the fellowship of your new club.

Worrying Times

Alistair’s car was broken into last Thursday in the car park. It is unlikely that someone came out all this way and only broke into one car so it is likely to have been someone playing golf that day. Please be mindful of leaving valuables in your car and keep an eye out for anyone suspicious messing with a car.

Bishops Cup 28th September

This great 27 hole tournament takes place on Saturday 28th and if you are unable to get a partner enter your name and the match committee will organise one for you.

Another Wedding Ring

Another wedding ring has been lost, this time in the carpark. We would appreciate everyone keeping an eye out for this.

Fulton Hogan Dumping Soil

In the Board newsletter sent out last week the president mentioned that Fulton Hogan were going to dump soil behind the practice tee and develop a new tee further back. Unfortunately the quality of soil is not good enough so this will not happen at this stage. It would have been a good solution bringing the tee back so that we could miss the wet patches during winter on the driving range. Maybe another time!

Masters Games 5-13 October

Our region is hosting the Masters Games next month and it is a great opportunity to meet with old friends or make new ones from around the South Island. Apparently there are only 18 of us from Greenacres who have entered the golf. It is really a good money spinner for the club and you get to play on your home course so get those entries in as soon as possible, it’s not too late.

Rarangi Golf Club – Visit

It is our turn to visit Rarangi this year and we have arranged it for the 16th November. If we have enough people we could organise a bus to go over for the day. Please put it in your diary. There will be a sheet in the lounge and in the Pro Shop for you to register your interest.

Couples Tournament Sunday 22nd September

This great event which is sponsored by Richmond Office Products will be run on Sunday 22nd September meeting at 10.30 am with a shotgun start at 11.30 am and the cost will be the same as last year at $30 a pair. There are two competitions with Couples and Mixed Pairs so everyone can enter. If you are unable to find a partner speak to the Pro Shop and they will be able to pair you up with someone. The tournament is run on an American Foursomes basis where both players tee off, play their partners ball for the second shot and then choose a ball and play the hole out as in foursomes.

Welcome to New Members

A big welcome to Brent Dixon who has joined as a 9 hole member, welcome Brent and enjoy your golf at our great course.

Congratulations

Well done to Kath Manaena for cleaning up the Nelson Women’s Classic at Nelson on the weekend. Also our team members who got the Nelson District over the line in the Quadrangular tournament held at Greenacres. Tom Dasler and Nick Ludbrook had four wins each in the senior team and helped the Nelson team win. Nick Hanna, Andrew Drummond and Hamish Drummond represented the four-man junior team and won as well. Well done to all of you.

Sad News

Margaret (Andy) McCliskie passed away last week. Andy was a life member and a very competitive player in her day and did lots of work behind the scenes, Andy will be sorely missed.

From The Pro Shop

Last Wednesday saw a victory for Peter Hanna in the 0-10 category Stableford with 39 points and in the 11-36 category Ed Buyck was victorious with 43 points. Chris Ruddleson, Graham Sherlock and Bryce Stobie all had a two. Congratulations to all our winners.

We have a special offer to all members this week.  Purchase any pair of trousers and you will be able to purchase a plain Adidas Golf Shirt for just  $20 (normal retail $49). Also should you purchase any dozen Srixon balls you will be able to purchase a Srixon all weather glove for just $10 (normal retail $22).

Verti-Draining

The verti-draining went well on Monday and part of Tuesday and because of the process used it allowed the women to play a full 18 on Tuesday. Next week we will sand the greens and fertilize them to take full advantage of this process. It has certainly cut down the mess of coring.

Next Wednesday – Jennian Homes

Our first hole sponsors Jennian Homes have their sponsored day on Wednesday 18th September. The course will be closed with limited play in the morning pre 12 noon.

The Dreaded Phone Call From The Boss

My boss phoned me today. He said, “Is everything Ok at the office?” I said, “It’s all under control. It’s been a very busy day. I haven’t stopped to take a break all day.” “Can you do me a favour?” he asked. I said “Of course, what is it?” “Pick up the pace a little. I’m in the group behind you.”

Coring Monday 9th September

We still need some volunteers for next Monday morning help the green keepers do the greens. We will be verti draining and will not be sanding the greens but there are other things that Hamish and Greg will need help with.

From The Pro Shop

Last Wednesday’s Stableford was won by Bryce Stobie with 42 points, runner up Larry Bethwaite on 39 and equal third position was occupied by both Derek Mckay and Charlie Rhodes with 38 points. Congratulations also go to Jeff Wilson who scored the only two of the day and with it a $60 Sharpies Voucher. Congratulations must also go to Neville Satherley who on Saturday took out the $50 Jackpot courtesy of two two’s (on the 5th and 17th).

If you are searching for the answer to your putting woes may I offer two solutions.

“Solution nbr 1”. Book a putting lesson with Alistair. At just $50 it’s great value and could see you on next week’s roll call of honour.

“Solution nbr 2” Get yourself a new putter, we have recently added to our range in the shop (for both left and right handers ), and though possibly a more expensive solution than nbr 1, this too could see you on next week’s roll call of honour. Also nothing beats the feeling of sinking a 20 footer with a nice new putter in your hand.
